Espn description

Are you a sports person? Do you have a favorite team you support? Then maybe ESPN is the app that needs to be on your phone today. Keep up with the sports world on this handy app that is named after and developed by the ever-so popular Sony ESPN sports channel. With 10 million downloads on the Google Play Store and a rating of 4.2 stars, ESPN is perhaps one of the trendiest sports app there is.

The Review

Right off the bat, the application will ask for location and media permissions. This is important to customize your experience with the app according to where you live. The app then asks you of your favorite leagues and the teams you support. Once you feed that information, you’re directed to the main homepage of the app.

The main home page features a video screen where the latest sports news is played. Below the video screen are dedicated columns for your favorite sports like football as well as the top headlines of the day. Scroll below and you’ll find news and games from your favorite teams and leagues.

But the home page isn’t the only feature ESPN offers. It has separate pages for scores, sports and watching highlights or streaming matches live.

The scores section is a great way to keep up to date with the latest scores of the matches your favorite teams are currently playing. Apart from the teams you support, the scores page has columns for International Friendly matches, French Open, Canadian GP, NBA and more according to the sports that are trending at the current time.

ESPN also hosts an even more in-depth section dedicated to your favorite teams and leagues. On the ‘Sports’ page, users can tap on a team of their choice and relevant news about the selected team as well as their latest match scores will pop up. Similarly users can select an entire sport like cricket or football and relevant news of that sport will be shown.

This streaming feature is powered by Sony LIV and shows specials of CPL, T20, La Liga, ATP Tennis and many more. You’ll have to launch the Sony LIV on your browser separately though; the app itself does not support live streaming which can be a bummer. Alternatively, users can also live stream with their TV provider and watch ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3, ESPNU, SEC Network, SEC Network Plus, ESPN News and Longhorn Network. However the access to these channels depends largely on your TV provider, their package and your internet service provider.

There is a downside to the streaming process though. Because of the contracts signed by TV providers and streaming channels, popular matches might not be available to stream at the exact same time as they go on-air. Nonetheless, it is still a great means to watch your favorite matches without the hassle of the television.

The watch feature on the app not only allows users to stream trending matches or watch their highlights but it also allows them to watch on-demand shows like First Take and Get Up! But to watch these, you need to register and subscribe to ESPN+. Furthermore, on ESPN app users can not only watch but also listen to ESPN podcasts or live commentary.

The crux of the app can be used without registering as well and there are few in-app purchases involved. In the settings, users can also choose to set alerts and notifications for any latest updates that come from their favorite sports team or sports.

Why do we recommend this app?

  • Helps you keep updated with your favorite team/league/sport’s scores
  • Provides the latest sports news that can be filtered according to your preference
  • Allows for live streaming matches and watching highlights
  • Allows for listening to podcasts
  • Few in-app purchases

What can be improved in this app?

  • The live streaming might not always be ‘live’ since the streaming might lag behind the actual on-air matches or not be available at all due to contractual limitations
  • You need to subscribe to ESPN+ to enjoy the full content of the app including on-demand shows

Sony’s ESPN is the perfect sports app for a sports junkie. If you’re one as well, you really need this app on your phone to keep in touch with the latest sports news.
