Snapchat description

Social media has become a competitive marketplace for developers and Snapchat isn’t one to fall back. In recent times, Snapchat has been giving some heated competition to the likes of social media giants such as Facebook and Instagram. In fact we have seen many original features of Snapchat being unapologetically copied by Facebook, Instagram and even Whatsapp! What’s make Snapchat such a formidable presence in the world of social networking? We’ve got all the details for you.

The Review

Snapchat isn’t a chatting platform per say. It’s not even a place where you simply share photos and watch how your comment box grows or count the number of likes you get. Snapchat is an innovative concept that was the first of its kind and is now inspiring many others.

On Snapchat, users get to send snaps (pictures) or a short video to their friends either directly or by uploading it on their Snapchat story. The pictures or videos you send to your friends directly can only be viewed twice and then they disappear. The stories you upload on your Snapchat story only last for 24 hours and then they are no longer visible to your friends. This brief viewing and quick sharing concept has become a fan favorite for many and it’s exactly why Snapchat is such a massive success. But that’s not all – oh, not even close!

Perhaps the even bigger reason for its success is the lens filter feature Snapchat offers. On the Snapchat camera, you can choose a lens filter from the list provided by the app simply by tapping on your face. This list is constantly updated almost every single day so there’s never a dull moment. You can choose to make your selfies look adorable with the dog filter or pretty with the flower crown – the options are limitless.

Snapchat also lets users decorate the pictures they take by adding their own customized text, drawing on the screen with an entire paint palette, or adding stickers and gifs. Stickers are the most fun part in Snapchat editing and with the latest edition of choosing from an entire library of gifs, editing has become a wonderful experience.

Bitmoji is supported by Snapchat so that users can build their own personal avatars and user the Bitmoji stickers on their photos or in chat. Bitmoji avatars give your Snapchat a unique personality and it’s also interesting to see how your friends’ avatars look like. Plus, you can also set the Bitmoji style or change its clothes to give your character all the more personality. Snapchat also offers a huge library of location filters or geofilters. These filters are tailored to your exact location and connect with your phone GPS. If you’re snapchatting in a place that has its own dedicated location filter (you can also submit your own!), you can add it to your photos simply by swiping a few times on photo editor.

The app also caters some basic filters to make the colors in your photos pop. There’s also the classic black and white filter you can go for. Special events filters or filters that follow the calendar are also sometimes available but you’ll have to be online to access them.

Snapchat also lets you view public stories of some of the most popular celebrities and similar star profiles. These stories can be accessed by swiping to the right of the main app screen.

You can also save your photos for your camera roll or simply for the memories page in your app. The photos saved in the memories tab will not be seen by your friends unless you choose to share them. You can also make your photos even more secure on the Snapchat app by placing them in the ‘Your Eyes’ section that has a passcode on it.

Snap Maps is a relatively new feature on the app as well. Although initially it posed some concerns over security, it’s actually a pretty benign and entertaining feature. By moving your closed thumbs apart on the main camera screen, you can access the Snap Maps. These maps will tell you where your GPS-enabled, publicly viewable friend is currently on Google Maps. You can also see whether a person is travelling, public snaps across the entire world and much more.

Snapchat is an app that was made for iPhone users and because of this Android users haven’t had the chance to enjoy this app in its full potential. All the latest updates come to the iOS version first and the camera quality of Snapchat in Android devices is substandard as well. But if you have an iOS device, Snapchat is one hell of a social media app!

Why do we recommend Snapchat?

  • Innovative social media platform with unique, timed photo sharing and stories
  • Tons of editing options with stickers, colors, filters, lens, geofilters and more
  • Intelligent lens filters that are updated daily
  • Public celebrity profiles can easily be viewed
  • Photos can be saved in the Memories or ‘My Eyes’ tabs
  • Supports Bitmoji
  • Snap Maps adds more bonus features
  • Free to use
