Video calling first came into being almost a decade ago and Skype had a huge part in it. For a very long time, Skype was the only way to communicate through free video calling with your loved ones across nations and oceans. Following suite, Facetime, Whatsapp and other video calling platforms emerged but Skype remained (and still does) the mother of video calling. It is still the most preferred video calling app for many dedicated users. In fact, Skype is the preferred method of conversation for business and employers with their online workers. It usually comes as a built-in application on both PC devices and smartphones but you can also download Skype for free directly from the Google Play Store or iTunes.
Skype is a free chatting software app that supports communications across mobile devices and desktop devices both. With Skype you can instantly call, text or video chat with a loved one no matter where they are provided they have Skype installed and running on their device.
Along with the video chatting feature, Skype was also one of the very first apps that supported free international messaging in a more modern way. Of course MSN messenger and Yahoo! came first but they were always more or less primitive compared to Skype. Texting on Skype is a fun affair. You can send sticker messages, photos, videos, voice notes and much more to your favorite people on Skype.
Skype also keeps things organized for you. You can categorize your list according to your most favorite contacts. You can also create entire group chats and make group voice or video calls, all for free. Whatsapp, the leading texting app currently, only recently introduced the feature of group video calls but Skype has been doing it for years!
You can also make direct international phone calls to a friend or family member on their personal mobile or landline number. This, of course, utilizes some charges but they are much more nominal than if you called an international number directly from your phone.
Skype is also a great place to share colorful, instant pictures with your friends. Simply swipe the main app screen to capture photos and videos. You can then choose to directly edit them by adding stickers, emoticons or your own customized text before sending them to one or multiple friends on your Skype friends list.
A relatively new feature introduced by Skype is the highlight feature. This is a feature that is obviously inspired from Snapchat where you can post highlight of your day and share them with your friends. You can also view your friends’ highlights and react to them with emoticons or even send them a private message about the particular highlight. Highlights on Skype, unlike Snapchat, can stick around in the app for 7 days unless you choose to delete them yourself.
You can also customize your Skype profile. Apart from choosing a username and display name for your profile, you can also choose your own display picture and add a status. Availability status of your profile can also be adjusted according to your availability.
Despite so many great things about Skype, there are some problems with the app. For starters, it’s not a light app like Whatsapp. Skype will take a decent amount of storage space and may lag sometimes. Audio quality of the calls isn’t the best either and can be improved.
