Discord description

Most smartphone games have limitations when it comes to conversation. There are only a handful of gaming apps in both the Apple Store and the Google Play Store that has a chat feature and facilitates conversations amongst players. Discord is one such app that can break this barrier and provide means to converse with other players no matter what game you play.

The Review

Discord is an app available for both iOS and Android users that makes socializing with fellow gamers possible. When you open the app for the first time, you’re requested to register right off the bat. Once you’ve successfully registered and verified your email, you’re good to go to use the messaging application.

So how does it work? At first sight, the simplistic design of the application with a lot of tiny options might baffle you but once you join servers, invite friends and join communities, you’ll get the hang of Discord eventually. Discord is aimed for children and teens and so happens to feature cartoony characters. Wumpus is the app’s mascot – a crowned monkey that you’ll find on almost every feature of Discord.

But Discord is more than just cutesy designs. It’s about inviting friends and socializing. Users can easily add friends or even host servers and invite friends to join in a group chat. Alternatively users can also join an existing server with an invite link. As easy it is to add friends, it’s equally easy to search for new ones. The intelligent and comprehensive search bar has filter options including users, text channels and servers.

Discord offer cross-platform chatting to be carried out. It facilitates both voice and text chat with your group. You can also engage in real-time messages and share videos and images. The app also has push notifications and Twitter-like handles to make searching for friends and mentions easier.

Apart from group conversations, Discord also allows users to directly message a friend. Furthermore, users can block people as well to keep their chats friendly and non-hostile.

Discord makes maneuvering around the app easy by making separate sections for online friends, pending request, suggested friends and users that you’ve blocked. With Discord you can also set your availability status like any good chatting application. Users can put their availability status as online, invisible, idle and do not disturb.

The app also offers a certain degree of customization if not a lot. Users can change the theme of their app by going into the settings and into the appearance option. The themes offered currently are a light theme and the standard dark theme.

Discord supports six different languages – English, Danish, German, Spanish and French – which can be changed from the settings bar as well. There are other settings to explore as well including the properties of the text and images shared, the behavior of the app, and the voice and video properties.

Gamers can also connect their social media and gaming accounts to the application to unlock special Discord integrations.

All of these features sound too good to be true but the app has received many hate reviews. These reviews come from the parents usually. Many parents have complained that the chat in Discord is poorly regulated and content shared in the app may not be appropriated for a child. They also complain of inappropriate language used in the chats as well as mature content and graphics. Despite this, Discord is considered a more secure and private app than others of its kind which makes it one of the most popular chatting app for gamers on smartphones.

Why do we recommend Discord – Chat for Gamers?

  • Easy to navigate and simple design
  • Facilitates a variety of chat features including voice and text chatting
  • Users can share videos, images and rich text
  • Both group chats and direct messages can be joined and sent with this app
  • Users have the option to block anyone they want

What can be improved in Discord – Chat for Gamers?

  • Content of the chat should be strictly regulated to make it more kid-friendly
  • Users who use inappropriate language or share mature content should be banned

Discord is a great app for serious gamers who enjoy sharing conversations with fellow players. It’s fun and easy to use – two qualities that give this app a permanent place in a gamer’s phone.
