The Review

Tigerball begins immediately with no start up tutorial or instructions as to what you’re supposed to do and how you’re supposed to navigate around the app. While it’s fairly simple to figure out that the goal of the game is to shoot your ball into the basket with the star on it, navigating around the app isn’t that simple and we’ll get on to that in a little bit. But first, let’s discuss the basics of the game.

As already mentioned, your objective in every level of Tigerball is to aim and bounce your ball in such a way that it lands in the yellow basket. No fluff, no hidden secrets – Tigerball has a very simple arcade-based gaming format. There will be obstacles along the way to amp up the difficulty level and there will be times when you’ll find yourself scratching your head as you figure the right angle to shoot. Controls are easy and all you need to make the ball bounce is swipe in the direction you want the ball to go. Bounce mechanics are integral to consider when making your move as are the proper angles.

There are two gaming modes in Tigerball: Best and Free Throws. In the Best gaming mode, you start with five lives and you progress level after level. Every time you miss the basket, you lose a life. When all of your lives are finished, the game is over and your best score is calculated. You then start all over again from level 1. This mode is highly competitive and you can see how well you rank and score in your personal achievements board.

The Free Throws mode is slightly different and more slow-paced. In this mode you don’t have a certain number of lives and you can throw to an unlimited amount. This all sounds pretty relaxing and casual but in reality it’s not. There’s a catch – you can only make a point (or a star) when you shoot in the basket consecutively. In order to clear a level in this mode, you’ll need to make a maximum of three star points. Because of this consecutive scoring system, you could be shooting twenty times in the basket and still not clear the level.

Tigerball has a lot of potential to be a fun and addicting game but it also has a lot of potential to get on your nerves. The amount of challenge that arrives with each level is dramatic and can sometimes force you to close the app altogether.

We also find the menu and homepage of this app slightly confusing. You’ll probably need some time getting used to and discovering all of the features and options in the app. The app graphics are pretty crude and the options are all splayed out on a back drop where options and features are concealed as pictures. There is hardly any text in the game which makes moving around the app especially perplexing.

Extra features Tigerball offers are new balls that you can unlock, special bomb effects to help you clear a particularly difficult level, more lives etc. All of these items can be unlocked much more quickly if you spend really money on them though.

Why do we recommend Tigerball?

  • Fun, addicting ball game that is highly physics based and works on bounce mechanics
  • Two different gaming modes each with their unique features
  • Tons of balls and challenging levels to unlock
  • Achievement chart where you can track your progress
  • Free to download and play

What can be improved in this app?

  • The app design is poorly devised with a lot going on and little explanation. Navigating around the app is very difficult and needs time getting used to
  • Unimpressive visuals
  • Some levels can be extremely frustrating and impossible to clear
