Snapseed description

Ask a professional photographer which app they would recommend for a quick edit or touch-up on your smartphone and they’re bound to throw Snapseed’s name somewhere in the list. There’s no denying that when it comes to professional editing, most will choose Adobe Lightroom and similar Adobe products for the ultimate effect but Snapseed is a quick and effective substitute that works especially well for portrait photos and even landscapes. The array of features this app offers is impressive and it is what puts Snapseed at the very top of its game. Snapseed is a free to download editing tool on the Google Play Store and the Apple iTunes store. It does offer some in-app purchases but most of the useful features are already available for free.

The Review

When you first download the Snapseed application, you’ll probably find yourself in a perplexing situation. There are a lot of features going on in a single place and navigating your way through each one will take time and practice. You might want to explore what each feature does and is all about. Eventually you’ll be able to make some serious and professional edits in this simple app on your smartphone.

The UI of the app is pretty friendly itself. Despite the plethora of features that can be overwhelming for beginners, the app design is pretty simple and classic. You don’t need a tutorial telling you how to import your photos or take a picture to start editing. It’s all really basic. But once you open the editing page, that’s where you might find yourself scratching your head and struggle with how each feature works.

Snapseed proudly hosts 29 different tools and filters which are a lot for any editing app. Mind you all of these features and tools are completely unique, advanced and professional. There is no overlap and you won’t find unnecessary tools in there. Some prominent and most used tools include healing, brush, structure, HDR and much more that we will look into later. What’s absolutely amazing about Snapseed is that it was actually designed for professional photographers. Not only can it import JPEG images, it can also import RAW files – something that only a handful of applications can do. You can directly edit your high definition RAW images on Snapseed without needing to convert them first to a simpler picture format which always destroys the original quality of the photo.

Users can also make use of selective tools and brushes to make a precise edit or touch up. This is unique as well because most editing apps only offer filters and tools that affect the entire picture instead of a selective area. This means that you can selectively brighten an area on your photo without affecting the rest of the image’s colors.

The features Snapseed offers are beyond the scope of this article but here’s a quick summary of what this app is capable of:

  • Tunes your images by adjusting the colors and exposure
  • Crop tool to resize freely or in proportion
  • Details tool to bring out the structure in your images
  • White balance
  • Rotating tool
  • Selective brushes
  • Healing
  • Vignette
  • HDR and perspective
  • Text
  • Lens Blur
  • A range of photo filters including Glamor Glow, Drama, Vintage, Retrolux, Grunge, Noir, Black and White, and Grainy Film effects
  • Frames
  • Face Enhancing tools

Snapseed offers this and much more. It’s definitely an app that is perfect for professional photographers looking for a quick edit on their smartphones. With Snapseed you can instantly save your edited photo to your phone gallery or share it directly on your social media.

Why do we recommend this app?

  • Offers a huge list of tools and filters perfect for quick professional editing
  • Has a selective tool brush for selective edits and touch ups
  • Can import RAW files as well
  • Free to download

What can be improved in this app?

  • Cannot be set as a default photo editor
  • Some features such as the text feature need improvement. The text feature is choppy and does not have a lot of options.
