Remember the time when Snake used to be our favorite mobile game on those indestructible Nokia models? Well, since then many apps have tried to reinvent the concept and present it as an original or a fresh game but only few have really done something note-worthy. Slither.io is one such game that seeks inspiration from the classic Snake game but adds a lot of twists and spins to it to make it into a wholly unique and highly addictive game. Slither.io is currently an Editor’s Choice app on the Google Play Store with over 100,000,000 downloads.
Slither.io features snake-cum-worms called slithers that are pitted against a whole bunch of other random slithers online in eye-catching, geometrical platforms. The objective of the game is to become the longest slither. How this is done is easy to understand but difficult to execute. Every time the head of your slither touches another slither, you’ll explode and it’s game over. But when someone else buts their head into you, they explode and you get to eat their remains to grow longer. This might seem like a scary, cannibalistic theme but the art is so cute that it’s hard to take it seriously.
When you begin the app, you’re asked to choose a username or simply a name for your slither. This can be just about anything you want. The username will be used everywhere in your online matches against other slithers so you’ll need to get creative and choose a unique username. Since usernames are poorly moderated, you might come across plenty of racy or objectionable usernames in the game as well.
But back to the gameplay, Slither.io is a terrific game with a high addiction potential. It has received some wonderful ratings on both the Google Play Store and iTunes. Controls of the game are simple. All you need to navigate and move your slither around the screen is make short swipes in the right direction. You can also collect small orbs of light in dispersed in the game landscape.
These orbs of light also help your slither to grow in size much like how you would grow by eating another slither’s remains. The larger your slither grows, the more difficult the game gets. That’s because now you have less space to move around in the game and you have a higher probability of crashing into another slither. The format of this game, as you may have noticed, is strikingly similar to the classic Snake game. The only major difference is that in this game you get to eat other slithers and battles out against real online players instead of just pixelated CPU controlled objects.
Players can also constantly take note of their length and size which are displayed on the top right corner of the app screen. The game ends when the player with the longest length survives. The longest length slither player can also post a message for other players to see.
Slither.io boasts decent 3D graphics with colorful 3D art and cute characters. The music and sound effects in the game are also praise-worthy and keep you in the mood to play for a few more hours.
Like most free apps, Slither.io has the infamous advertisement problem. There are just too many ads to bear in the game and some might not even be the most appropriate for younger Slither.io players. It’s important that the developers devise ways to reduce the number of in-game advertisements and strictly moderate them for a more secure gaming experience for children.
