Pokemon Quest description

The Pokemon series has been making waves in both the anime world and the gaming world for over two decades now. This beloved franchise is still a fan favorite even after years and new installments keep on coming every year. Pokemon Go blew up a few years ago and ever since then Pokemon games on smartphones have been making some prominent appearances. Pokemon Quest is one of the Editor’s Choice games on the Google Play Store with over 4-star rating. It’s a unique take on the Pokemon franchise but one that still manages to make a good impression.

The Review

Pokemon Quest is set on Tumblecube Island where everything exists in a Minecraft-like pixelated box style. Yes, that’s right – you won’t enjoy the classic Pokemon graphics or characters in this one but Pokemon Quest is equally interesting. Besides, we’re all down for some change now and then.

The story is pretty clean and simple: it follows our beloved Pokemons all in block-style art. As a researcher in the game, your job is to set up a base camp on Tumblecube Island, catch Pokemon and explore the island grounds. You can also cook in the game and come up with creative recipes. The Pokemon you collect can also be evolved and their skills boosted. Plus, you’ll uncover a lot of intriguing secrets of Tumblecube Island on your journey.

While the setting of Pokemon Quest as well as Pokemon in the game are familiar, there’s no sign of Ash Ketchum, Professor Oak, Nurse Joy or other recurrent Pokemon characters in the picture.

The gameplay of Pokemon Quest is different from the Nintendo games of the franchise and miles apart from Pokemon Go; it’s an original concept that Pokemon fans will find refreshing. Pokemon Quest is basically a role playing action game where Pokemon can be used to fight and catch other Pokemon by using special abilities and attacks. This includes poisoning, shooting fireballs or making it rain rocks. The violence portrayed in the game is, as always, childish and not bloody at all. So, it is an appropriate game for children.

The gist of the game is this: cook food, catch Pokemon, make a team and set out for exploration. Cooking is not an optional feature of the game; you need to cook in order to recruit your Pokemon and make sure they are ready for exploration and battle. You also need to equip your Pokemon with Power Stones to boost their abilities and help them survive the island of Tumblecube. The combat in the game is straightforward and you can even put it on an automatic mode by clicking the auto button. Some players might argue that for a Pokemon game, Pokemon Quest might be a little too basic and simple.

Let’s talk about the graphics now. Pokemon Quest, as mentioned already, has art highly reminiscent of Minecraft. This means that the graphics are block style and highly simplified that can be both good and bad. Fans of these kind of simple graphics will find Pokemon Quest an eye candy but those who prefer richer graphics will think otherwise.

Pokemon Quest is essentially a free to download and play role playing game. There are some in-app purchases you can make in the game to get better Power Stones and catch exclusive, rare Pokemon but you don’t really need any of those to advance in the game.

Pokemon Quest was first released for the Nintendo Switch. The fact that it made its way into our smartphones is evidence of how much fans love the franchise.

Why do we recommend Pokemon Quest?

  • Unique block-style, simple yet vivid graphics
  • Fun, addicting role playing gameplay that involves cooking, exploring, catching Pokemon and fighting
  • Combat is non-violent and easy
  • Power Stones can be used to upgrade your Pokemon and make them stronger
  • Free to play

What can be improved in Pokemon Quest?

  • Some players may find the graphics too simple for their taste
  • Original Pokemon human characters are pretty much missing
  • Combat is too simple with little skill or challenge required to win
