Microsoft Word description

Microsoft Word is perhaps the oldest yet still the most popular writing and editing app on the PC. This software created by the Microsoft team is an entire package and it provides a platform for many people around the world to make a living. What started off as a PC software application is now an essential app on smartphones. In fact some smartphone models include Microsoft Word along with other Microsoft apps as built-in applications.

The Review

Although it’s an undeniable fact that typing long essays and producing a well-edited and formatted piece is much easier and convenient on your computer. But if you’re looking for a quick and portable way to get a writing job done, the Microsoft Word app on your phone might come in handy.

This app can do just about everything its PC counterpart can. Although toggling around the page is a bit clumsy (as is the zooming in and out feature), it still provides a solid ground for people who need to write or edit an important document.

When you first download and install Microsoft Word, you need to create an account to proceed further. You could choose to skip the step but you won’t be able to make use of most of the features of this Microsoft Office app if you do. Next, you can either choose to edit an existing Word document on your phone or create a new one.

The new document you create doesn’t have to be a blank page only. Just like the PC version, Microsoft Word app offers different layouts and formatting styles. Although these are not as extensive as the ones offered in your laptops, they are good enough. For example you can choose to create a list, take notes, write a journal, create an outline, make a brochure, newsletter, research paper, flyer or academic-style papers – the options are plenty.

The typing and formatting in the Microsoft Word app is precise. Although a lot of the original features are missing, the ones that come in use the most all exist. You can choose to type in bold or in italics. You can change the color of the font, the font itself or choose to highlight it. You can also play around with the paragraphing format as well as add bullet points or numbering. In short – the Microsoft Word app delivers all the editing and writing essentials one would need on their smartphone.

The Microsoft Word app also allows users to open and view PDF files or purchased e-books. Users can convert the PDF file into a word document and edit it or highlight it as they need.

Perhaps one of the biggest advantages of this app on our phones is the easy and quick sharing option. Unlike in a PC version where you would have to email or attach a document to send to a friend or colleague, the smartphone app makes it much more convenient to directly share a document through your email, social media accounts or your texting applications such as WhatsApp.

Microsoft Word also connects with your OneDrive account making sharing and saving your files even more easy. The app is free to download although some minor features can be purchased.

Why do we recommend this app?

  • Quick and easy way to edit your documents or essays on your phone without the hassle of a computer
  • Facilitates almost all the editing and formatting essentials the PC version of the app does
  • PDF files and E-books can be viewed. PDF files can also be edited after converting them to doc files
  • Allows for quick and easy sharing of documents through email and texting applications like WhatsApp
  • Free to download and use

What can be improved in this app?

  • Toggling the page and selecting a specific point in the text can be cumbersome
  • Zooming in and out of the page can be clumsy
  • Cannot be used to write long essays with proper, clean formatting. Only helpful for small write-ups and editing

If a big part of your work involves using Microsoft Word, it’s absolutely necessary that you have the app on your smartphone as well. So the next time your boss or teacher tells you to edit a document ASAP, you can simply get the job done through your phone without even turning on your laptop.
