True to its name, Cannon Man is a game that is centered on a man shooting out of a cannon. It seems like a pretty horrid, gruesome concept but it really isn’t. There’s no blood or gore involved in this game and it’s actually pretty hilarious when it comes to the art and the gameplay. There are areas where this app can definitely improve but overall the game does make for a good pass time, if only for a little while.
Cannon man is a 3D animated game that features an acrobat (or so we assume) shooting out like a cannon ball from a cannon. The objective of the game is to make your man fly as far as you can to get points. Hit targets and you’ll get some bonus in-game currency. With the in-game currency which is coins, you can purchase offline point bonuses and upgrade your canon to make it shoot to a higher and further distance. Collecting coins is fairly easy and the cannon upgrades don’t come at a particularly high price either, at least in the beginning. When you’ve reached a significant upgrade level for your cannons, you might find it more expensive to upgrade your cannon further which might force you to purchase points with actual money or get double point through watching a 30 second long advertisement video. But we highly doubt anyone sticks around with this game for such a long time so you probably won’t need to invest in the coins.
The controls of Cannon Man are pretty simple on paper but when you actually work them out, you might find the controls non responsive and clumsy. You don’t get to set the direction of the cannon manually. The cannon is always moving around left to right and the key is to tap at the right time to shoot in the direction you want the man to go flying. This is usually in the center unless you want to hit an interesting target on the peripheries. The game also informs you that you can control the flying direction or trajectory of the man mid-flight but does that actually work? We’ve got some issues with it.
Although you can swipe the screen left to right as the man flies, you might find the controls to be unresponsive. In fact, the man’s direction of flying may not change at all no matter how aggressively you swipe on the screen. The developers really need to make these controls smoother to make Cannon Man a game that is fun to play in terms of control. The setting of the game reminds of as a circus at first but the landscape tends to change with distant. Splayed across the screen are certain targets that give you extra points or stop you from falling down and propelling further into the game. For example, if you land on a TNT dynamite box, the explosion will make you propel further and break your fall. This way you can score some extra points. Similarly, landing on the trampoline will naturally make you jump and throw you at a further distance. How you hit these targets is the real problem. Since the controls are poor, most of the target hitting is based on pure luck and how well you’ve upgraded your cannon.
Ads are a particular problem for this free to download application. Long video ads tend to play after every two or three attempts which are incredibly frustrating and the reason why so many people end up deleting the game. You can purchase an ad-free version of the app but it isn’t really worth it unless the developers polish the game in terms of controls. Cannon Man definitely has potential but needs to be executed better. It’s available for both Android and iOS users.
