Angry Birds Evolution description

Seven years ago, a bird vs. pig slingshot combat game took the game world by storm. Inspired by the swine flu pandemic at the time, Angry Birds is a name that is known by almost everyone with a phone. Since the first game came out, the Finnish developers Rovio Entertainment have released several renditions. However these renditions offer spin-offs or an extension to the original plot and not a continuation - until now.

Angry Birds Evolution is the latest installment in the Angry Birds series and one that stands out from its predecessors. Unlike the monotonous combat gameplay in the original game, Angry Birds Evolution adds a blend of role play, tactic and a detailed storyline to keep players entertained.

But when it comes to critics, this latest addition to the family has not been met with kindness to the extent that some prominent sources like Wired have dubbed the game ‘unnecessary’. Here’s a detail look into what the game is all about.

The Review

Angry Birds Evolution is an app that takes up half a GB of space in your phone. This size is evidence of the game’s stunning graphics and extensive plotline. Played in landscape mode, the game narrates the time when green little pigs have invaded Bird’s Island. Now it’s up to our feathery heroes to save the day and stop the pigs in their tracks.

To do this, players must gather a well-armed army of birds which can be collected from different parts of the map. To get to these areas on the map, you have to battle the pigs along the way with your existing army. Every victory results in more coins, gems and fodder which help in leveling up your birds.

Angry Birds Evolution is colorful to say the least. The game offers over 300 birds and enemies and over a 100 customizable flock of birds to choose from. The element of RPG that has been added to the game makes the game much more immersive than the simple 2D slingshot battles as seen in previous editions. In this RPG mode, you can scout for treasure coins and gems to make your birds stronger and help them evolve Pokemon style. The battles themselves, however, still follow the same principle – you fire your army in a slingshot manner onto the oinkers to flip them over and ultimately destroy them.

Apart from the storyline, players can also go online and take part in online arena battles as well as Player vs. Player (PVP) style battles.

Developers of the app have gone one step further in making the game exciting by adding subtle references, jokes and cameos. For example, there’s a bird that takes inspiration from Harry Potter and one that imitates Zelda. Regular gamers will pick up the references quickly and enjoy the jokes although they might not have the same effect for everyone.

As you progress through the levels and battles, the game gets more and more interesting and the plotline thickens. But that’s where things get equally frustrating as well as you soon realize that freebies and coins are short lived after, say, level 10. Since coins and fodder are needed to evolve your birds and make them stronger, you’ll soon notice you’re running out of coins and fodder and the only way to get them is by purchasing them. This in-app purchase can be quite annoying especially when you realize there is no way to proceed and defeat stronger enemies without evolving your birds.

The game also offers a monthly subscription of around $25 which, in truth, is too much for a mobile game for kids. This limitation because of purchases has forced players to delete the game from their phones and leave poor reviews on the app store.
